The dark evenings are again amongst us, Sam Maguire is camping in Donegal and South Kerry have seen the exit door in the County Championship. So what now is the sporting topic at the tip of everyone's tongue? The South Kerry Championship. In addition, no South Kerry club have progressed in any respective club championship therefore the South Kerry Board are set to have a headache free championship, we hope. This year our district side comprises of a Divison 1 club, two Divison 2 clubs, two Division 3 clubs, a Divison 4 club and two Divison 5 clubs. History will tell, never make predictions based on a club's league standing and general performance to date.
St. Mary's will make the short journey to Renard Saturday afternoon to contest the second quarter-final with throw in at 5pm. The bookies will clearly favour the town side, but Renard are not to be written off too quickly especially with doubts surrounding whether or not Brian Sheahan will be available.

Valentia will have a tough task on their hands to overcome St. Micheal's Foilmore who only recently concluded their Senior County Championship run. Both teams carrying injuries but the home side side, judging on paper, are expected to progress. This game has been postponed to next weekend October 6/7th.

Sneem/Derrynane will entertain Skellig Rangers on Saturday October 6th at 2.30pm with a venue yet to be decided. With both teams on opposite ends of their respective county league campaigns one would expect the Rangers to have far more momentum entering this game. Patie O'Mahoney will share the sideline with his mate in GAA - Kieren McCarthy. Both individuals anxious to progress to the semi final stage. Waterville will host Dromid Pearses Sunday afternoon at 2pm  This clash is a difficult one to predict and certainly one to watch. In last year's semi-final Dromid took the victory against Waterville so that memory is expected to fuel the home side.

The semi-finals are chalked down for October 13th and 14th with the final round of the County League on the agenda for the following weekend. The final is hoped to be played during the October bank holiday weekend, much to the delight of the clubs involved. No doubt an exciting month lies ahead. Best wishes to all involved.

The Jack Murphy Cup

So who was Jack Murphy?

Jack Murphy was a native of Ballycarberry. He joined the garda and won his first All-Ireland in 1924. He played in 1925 and again in 1926 when Kerry drew with Kildare in the All-Ireland final. Jack was the hero in the drawn final with a man of the match display. He organised collective training in Tralee for the replay. The 'Over the Water' man was put up in a B&B in Tralee where he developed pneumonia perhaps from wearing wet clothes after training. Jack was very ill when Kerry won the replay and he died 11 days later at the tender age of 22. A cup in honour of Jack Murphy was donated in 1969 by his family to the St. Mary's club for an inter county tournament on whit Sunday. When the county leagues put paid to these tournaments it was given to the south Kerry board for the south Kerry championship. It was first presented by chairman Micheal Lyne (grand nephew of Jack) to Joe Joe O Sullivan, winning captain for Renard in 1975.
