Skellig Rangers travelled to Tralee to face St. Pat’s Blennerville in Round 10 of the County League and narrowly missed out on the chance to claim all two points which dents their promotion hopes, with 8 teams vying for second and third place in the table with one round remaining.
Kieran Hurley was well marshalled by full back Bernard Walsh but despite this the home side ran into a two point lead early on. Skellig started slowly, despite Alan Devane kicking over a point after being set up by Martin O’ Sullivan, who was an aerial threat throughout. Daniel O’ Sullivan, starting his first competitive match in close to a year, pointed a free before Ciaran Keating pointed but the home side rallied and had Luke Mulligan to thank after he burst through, slipped the ball to Gary Savage who dispatched it past Padraig O’ Sullivan in goal. The half time score read 1-3 to 0-3 but Skellig could have been further behind was it not for Bernard Walsh’s tight marking and a couple of saves from Padraig O’ Sullivan.
The second half, Skellig rallied although Pats were on the scoreboard with Joe Costelloe pointing. Stephen O’ Sullivan burst from midfield to reply for the away team. Micheál O’ Sullivan was introduced and kicked over a point while lively wing forward David O’ Callaghan curled over a nice point for the home team to keep the deficit at one. Daniel O’ Sullivan pointed another free soon after with Micheál O’ Sullivan kicking over to put Rangers in the lead with 8 minutes remaining. However, St. Pats, having their resilience tested, had scores from Andrew Byrne and Gary Savage to claim a one point lead and take the win on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-11 points which leaves Skellig Rangers needing to win their remaining game to have any chance of reaching Division 1.

Report from PRO of St. Pat's GAA Club

Our thanks to the St. Pats Club for their kind hospitality shown to players and supporters after yesterday's county league game. Here is a match report from their PRO.

This Division 2 Round 10 County League game played in Blennerville on Sunday saw the home supporters greet the final whistle with a huge sigh of relief,Skellig ha failed to convert an injury time free that would have levelled the game and thus made the long trip home empty handed. The first half of this game was a dour affair with both defences on top and both teams guilty of basic handling errors and simple turn overs,The opening score of the game came on the fifth minute with a Kieran Hurley 45 Giving St Pats the lead.Skellig keeper Padraig O'Sullivan saved brilliantly from Brendan Poff four minutes later St Pats went two points up on the 12th minute when Gary ''Lar'' Savage pointed. It took Skellig 19 minutes to open their account with a Daniel O'Sullivan pointed free.Lively Skellig corner forward Sean Courtney levelled the game a minute later The next score came on the 27th minute when St Pats David O'Callaghan edged the home team in front with a point from play.Liam Poff fielded the resultant kick out and dispatched a high ball towards the Skellig goals,Kieran Hurley knocked the ball into the path of Gary ''Lar'' Savage who finished to the net to score the games only goal.Skellig pushed forward in numbers for the remaining minutes of the half and could have goaled themselves on the 30th minute when a Martin O'Sullivan effort was blocked by Derek O'Sullivan.Ciaran Keating pointed a free on the 31st minute to leave the half time score St Pats 1-03 Skellig Rangers 0-03

Skellig started the second half in determined fashion with Stephen O'Sullivan scoring a brilliant long range point to reduce the deficit to two points.Skellig keeper Padraig O'Sullivan kept the game alive with a mighty save from an Andy Byrne effort a minute later Aidan Dash O'Sullivan pointed for Skellig to leave the minimum between the sides again.Kieran Hurley kicked two points inside 5 minutes one from a free to restore St Pats three point advantage.Skellig substitute Michael O'Sullivan kept his side in touch with a point from play ten minutes into the half. The outstanding Andy Byrne replied with a point for St Pat two minutes later.Stephen O'Sullivan kicked another long range point to leave the score St Pats 1-06 Skellig 0-08 heading into the final quarter.St Pats half back Luke Mulligan stretched the home sides advantage with a point in the 48th minute of play.Skellig hit a purple patch over the next five minutes scoring three unanswered points, two Ciaran Keating Frees and a Sean Courtney point from play to put them a point in front heading into the last five minutes of the game.David O'Callaghan played some mighty football in the last 5 minutes of this game,He kicked two mighty points on the 56th and 58th minute to restore St Pats advantage. As the game headed into the 3rd minute of injury time Skellig mounted one final attack which resulted in Sean Courtney being fouled 30 meters out from the St Pats goal.Daniel O'Sullivan's resultant ant free drifted just wide of the upright much to the relief of the home supporters.
Skellig should have taken something from this game but were wasteful in front of goal and apart from the injury time missed free they also kicked 4 scorable frees wide in the first half and this proved costly at the final whistle.St Pats never gave up and when they did fall a point behind didn't panic and pulled it back to rescue two valuable league points.A cause for concern has to be the lack of discipline at vital times with three players receiving yellow cards.
Skellig had good performances from Padraig O'Sullivan, both Stephen O'Sullivans,Sean Courtney and Martin O'Sullivan
St Pats just edged this one because of their greater ability in front of goals and had good performances from Anton O'Callaghan,Paul McMahon,Kevin O'Shea, Luke Mulligan,Liam Poff Brendan Poff, David O'Callaghan and Man of the match Andy Byrne who tormented Skellig all day.
