Round 5 in the County League was the fixture this weekend as Skellig Rangers made the trip to Ardfert on Saturday evening with a final score of 3-5 to 1-11, a draw despite Skellig Rangers completely dominating proceedings in the first half. Conditions were similar to the majority of games this year-slippery, wet and greasy ensuring mistakes were made, balls were misplaced and possession proving crucial especially from breaking ball. Skellig, flying high in the table, came to Ardfert who were sitting rather uncomfortably in the bottom 2 in this league and came away with a deserved point after a tough, intense match.

The match began with Skellig taking complete control in a wave of attacks with Aidan O’ Sullivan strolling through from midfield, Ciaran Keating taking the game to Ardfert and Alan Devane linking up well with his teammates providing the platform for most of the away sides’ attacks. They were 6 points up to no score, with scores from Devane himself, a brace from Brian Hickey and a couple from Ciaran Keating helping them into a good lead. Ardfert were failing to get a hold on the game around the middle and Skellig mopped up the breaks efficiently with Aidan O’ Sullivan taking off in his trademark solo run from midfield to curl a brilliant ball over the bar. Ardfert’s response came from Stephen Wallace when he goaled at a crucial time midways through the half. It came about when a shot was parried clear by goalkeeper Padraig O’ Sullivan and Wallace was the first to react when he poked it home from a few yards out. Keating tapped over a free for Skellig again to keep Ardfert at bay and  shortly after Bernard Walsh drove up the field from full back and showed a forward’s composure when he slotted between the sticks. Ardfert’s only other score in this half was a point to leave the Half Time score 1-1 to 0-10.

The second half began with the rain showing no signs of stopping making play even more slippery. Skellig failed to carry on the impressive work they had done in the first half in the first few minutes of the second as Ardfert asserted control when their full forward goaled to reduce the deficit. He shortly popped over a point while Skellig were finding it difficult to get out of defence and they were sitting a lot deeper than they were in the first half. Ardfert had a new lease of life in this half, defended ferociously and another attack yielded a point when their attacking wing back pointed impressively from close to the sideline.  Skelligs lead was just down to a point now and Alan Devane kicked over another good score to give Skellig that cushion they needed. However, a 2 point lead is a dangerous one and Ardfert managed to goal when Cian Hussey rose highest and flicked into the back of Padraig O’ Sullivan’s net much to the despair of the players. In contrast, there was jubilant scenes on the Ardfert bench with a few minutes remaining. Another point from Ardfert made their lead 3 points with 3 minutes remaining. However, Skellig dug deep and a wonderfully floated ball in from Ronan Shea, who replaced Micheál O’ Sullivan earlier, was met by the fist of midfielder Stephen O’ Sullivan who climbed highest amongst the crowd of players and directed it into the back of the net which was the last action of the half and ended the game on a score line of 3-5 to 1-11. The result now means that Skellig Rangers are in second place on the table on 7 points, 2 behind Finuge while Ardfert picked up their 3rd draw meaning they have 3 points, second from bottom.
