South Kerry U-16 League Final Skellig Valentia: 3-08 St Marys Renard: 2-08

This was a game of two halves! A lesser team would have packed up and gone home at half time but not St Marys Renard. They took charge in the second half and dominated in all areas of the field. They clawed back the home sides 9 opening half lead & ran out of time in the end losing by a mere goal.
Conditions were ideal, the pitch was impeccable and both sides were very evenly matched. This game promised to be a nail biting affair and true to its word, it was. Skellig Valentia were quick off the mark and dominated the first half. They outscored the visitors 2-06 to 0-03. The pick of the scores was Jim Lynch’s goal on the 14th minute: Anthony Driscoll who was governing at midfield sent a long ball in to the square which found Lynch, Jim made no mistake in burying it in the back of The Marys Renard net. When John Murphy was awarded a penalty just minutes before half time top scorer Diarmuid Keating finished it off adding the goal to his tally of six points in the opening half. St Marys Renard’s Darren Casey scored their opening two points and one from Mark Sugrue. Anthony O’Driscoll was winning at midfield over Mark Sugrue while the forwards John Murphy, Donal O’Sullivan and Diarmuid Keating worked well together. The backs were like a block of defence with Brian Kennedy, Gearoid Riordan and Brendan Murphy playing strong. The Valentia trio of Senan Lynch, Mike Moriarty & Jim Lynch were like a well oiled machine and worked well together.

The second half would all depend on how St Marys Renard would start. A goal and a point in the opening 5 minutes for the homeside looked like the nail in the Marys Renard Coffin. Surely a 3-07 to 0-03 lead would be enough to kill them. Keelin Moriarty goaled on the ninth minute and gave the away team the lift they needed. They took over from here and went on a scoring spree, with points from Darren Casey (1) and Jack Daly (2) before a Mark Sugrue ball in found Darren Casey and he goaled. Game on! 17 minutes on the clock and the scoreboard looked more respectable, 3-08 to 2-06. Skellig Valentia remained scoreless from the 12th minute on and St Marys were winning the breaking ball and putting severe pressure on the Skellig Valentia defence. They added two more points before the full time whistle. But time and tide wait for no man and this was to be Skellig Valentia’s day. Captain Anthony O’Driscoll accepted the plaque from South Kerry Board chairman Michael Keating (A Rangers man by heart). This was an all round team performance with every man stepping up to the plate.

Their mentors Brendan Murphy, Joe Moore and Paul O’Sullivan have stated that they couldn’t have met a nicer bunch of footballers and it is a pleasure to train them. Watch out, these are our future senior footballers but for now they are the South Kerry League champions for 2013, who were unbeaten throughout the league finishing on full points. Well done to all involved.
