Skellig Rangers continue their winning streak with gritty Championship win over local rivals Waterville.

Skellig Rangers secured their passage into the semi-finals of the Club Intermediate Championship with a tense and hard fought 1-9 to 1-5 win over Waterville. A slight breeze favoured the home side in the first half and they were first on the scoreboard when Ciaran Keating slotted over a free  after good work from Brian Hickey. In true Championship fashion, a lot of play was around the middle, ferocious and fair tackling was to the fore and breaking ball was fairly even among both teams with Kevin Martin and Paddy Curran doing well in this area. Skellig Rangers went three points up, one from the tireless midfielder Stephen O’ Sullivan and the other from the left boot of Martin O’ Sullivan after he collected a long ball, swivelled and curled over from close range. Waterville’s response came from Gearoid O’ Sullivan after 15 mins when he kicked over to make it two points between the sides. However, Brian Hickey responded with a point for Rangers after good play from Ciaran Keating who in turn then pointed from near the. Skellig Rangers defence were proving difficult to breach for the opening quarter but Waterville began to assert control and kicked over points from Paddy Curran, who got 2 in a row. The Half Time score read 0-5 to 0-4 for Skellig Rangers. The first half was a case of Skellig storming out of the blocks but then Waterville, kicking into the lower goal, against the breeze, gaining an upper hand before the interval.

Skellig started the second half with Brian Hickey kicking over to make it two between the sides. Then a period came in the game where Skellig couldn’t get the ball into their dangerous inside forward line and where Waterville resorted to the long ball tactic, looking for Stephen Dwyer who was marshalled well all day by Bernard Walsh who gave an exhibition in determined tackling throughout. Brian O’ Sullivan kicked over a good point after being set up by Brian Hickey and the last 10 minutes were excitingly tense as either side could have went on and won it. Waterville gained the ascendency when Alan O’ Shea palmed a loose ball into the back of Padraig O’ Sullivan’s net which sank the Portmagee supporters’ hearts. However, the Skellig players showed desire, resilience and pace and had Ciaran Keating to thanks when he executed sublime technique to score a 45 against the wind. Shortly after, Keating collected a pass and surged close to goal where he buried it low into the net with only minutes remaining. This had Skellig Rangers 5 points clear with 3 minutes to go. Waterville were awarded a free from 15 yards and Denis Dwyer went for point as Skellig had a green and goal wall on the goaline. It was a mere consolation for the Waterville players and ensured Skellig ran out winners on a final scoreline of 1-9 to 1-5. Eventough it was a typical spirited team performance, Bernard Walsh, Brian Murphy , Stephen O’ Sullivan and Kevin Martin shone out for the Rangers defence, Stephen and Aidan O’ Sullivan were to the fore around the middle, Alan Devane worked tirelessly, Brian Hickey controlled affairs from centre forward and Martin O’ Sulivan and Ciaran Keating were a threat inside. Well done to all involved.
