County Intermediate Championship Quarter Final. Skellig Rangers 1-05 Currow 2-04. Conditions for this game were very difficult as there was a crossfield wind blowing throughout. However which ever team was playing into the village goal had a slight advantage. It was rangers who had that advantage in the first half, but the tricky conditions were making it hard for both teams to play good football and the scoring wasnt opened until the 9th minute when Patrick Mccarthy slotted a penalty. Rangers responded quickly with points from Ciaran Keating(F) and Gary O Driscoll but scores were hard to come by and it wasnt until the 22nd minute that Gary O Driscoll equalised for rangers. John Buckley(F) had currow back in front but Rangers finished the half the stronger. Ciaran Keating levelled matters with a great point from a long range free and when Daniel O'Sullivan dropped a 45 short and it was keating who fisted it over the bar to leave the half-time score at Skellig Rangers 0-05 Currow 1-01. Currow had played well when against the wind in the first half and they went in front with a great score from Patrick Mccarthy and point from a free from John Buckley. It was after this score rangers began to dominate. With Kevin Martin and Colin O Sullivan driving things on from the half-back line they attacked in waves and began to win the midfield battle. The forwards were coming more into the game, in particular Sean Courtney who was causing the Currow defence problems. However despite rangers having several chances and the ball bouncing around the currow goalmouth a couple of times, Rangers could not find a score and the decisive moment came in the 52nd minute. A Patrick Mccarthey free kick appeared to be going over the bar but it dropped short and into the net to give Currow a 4 point cushion. Ciaran Keating sloted a penalty to reduce the margin to 1 but Rangers couldnt find an equaliser and Currow closed out the game well and in injury time James Galway slotted the insurance point. Due to the conditions this was not the best game of football quaility wise however both teams must be commended for thier hard work and commitment to the cause throughout the game. Scores were hard to come by throughout and both sets of defences were on top. Ultimately the difference between the two sides was Patrick Mccarthys Fortuitous goal. Rangers had no such luck in front of goal.
