Round 4 County Senior Football League Division 2

St Marys 0-08 Skellig Rangers 1-10

Round 4 of the County Football League played at Con Keating Park Caherciveen on Saturday evening last saw Skellig Rangers pick up 2 valuable points against near neighbours St Mary's.
Rangers played with the aid of the wind in the first half, it took both teams a while to settle, Rangers getting off the mark with a free from Brian Hickey following a foul on Sean Courtney after 9 minuties. Courtney followed up this with 2 excellent points from play. St Marys got off the mark from a close in free from Austin Constable. Rangers were dominating the play in the first half and had further points from Alan Devane, Brian Hickey (free), Sean Courtney, Adian O Sullivan & Mike Keating. Their good play reflected on the score board. Just before half time full forward Gary O Driscoll saw his goal bound effort denied by the crossbar and the rebound was gathered by Mike Keating but his shot was cleared by the St Mary's defenders off the line and away to safety. St Marys had a score from play just on half time to leave it 8 points to 2 to Skellig Rangers at the break.

St Mary's made the brighter start to the second half and had a point on the scored board from corner forward Declan Keating on the restart. Further St Mary's play saw a pointed free from Austin Constable and a 45 from Denis Daly, after 10mins the deficit was down to 3 points. However a well converted 45 from the boot of Skellig's Daniel O Sullivan settled the Rangers and a fisted point from Alan Devane brought the gap out to 5 once again.  A reply by full forward Daniel Daly left the game wide open with 10 minutes to play. However Rangers drove forward and a good run through the centre by Gary O Driscoll, now operating further out the field, found his brother Christopher in the box where he was taken down and a penalty awarded, Brian Hickey converted the kick to the bottom left hand corner giving the St Mary's keeper no chance. St Marys fought back hard and had 2 further points from play but time ran out and Rangers held on for victory.
It was an excellent all round team display from the Rangers with the backs doing a good job on the lively St Mary's forwards and a wide range of scorers from forwards earning their first 2 points of the county league campaign. No doubt they will cross paths with St Mary's later in the year.
