Rangers narrowly lose out to Spa in Round 5 of County League

posted 18 May 2014, 08:53 by Kissee Wardlaw
Skellig Rangers raced into an early lead and were 4 points up inside the first 10 minutes thanks to points from full forward Ciaran Keating and Brian Hickey. However, despite starting slowly, Spa began to assert control midways through the half and had points thanks to their corner forward Craig Hickey and wing forward Cormac Cronin. Despite the first half being very even between both sides, the Killarney side went in a point ahead at the break, 0-6 to 0-5. The scoreline at half time could have been different though with Michael 'Stam' O' Donoghoue opting to point a penalty rather than go for goal with 20 minutes gone.

The second half started with a score from Spa after good work from Michael O' Donoghoue around the middle. Rangers responded with a good point from Brendan O' Sullivan to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Spa managed another point but Rangers rallied and kicked three successive scores, 2 from the industrious Alan Devane and one from wing back Anthony O' Driscoll after he got on the end of an attack and pointed well from close to the sideline. Midways through the half Mike Keating replaced Brian O' Sullivan after he received a black card and Spa had another score from Craig Hickey. Ciaran Keating scored two more points but Michael O' Donoghoue responded with 2 frees for Spa and one more point from play. The home side tried to come back into contention again but unfortunately they were reduced to 14 men when Brian Hickey was harshly sent off and Ciaran Keating was replaced by Bernard Casey after he also received a black card. Despite Ronan O' Shea landing a point with the outside of his left , Spa broke up the field from the kick out and had a goal from Craig Hickey to leave the score at 0-12 to Skellig Rangers, 1-11 to Spa.
