South Kerry Championship Skellig Rangers (1-5) v' Waterville (2-7)

This first round South Kerry Championship game saw Waterville travel to Portmagee on Sunday in search of victory following their recent qualification to the county Intermediate final and they didnt't disappoint in front of a large crowd on a misty afternoon . Aided with the wind advantage, in the first half they got off to a perfect start with a goal on their first attack. A long ball into their full forward Denis Dwyer and the former Kerry All Ireland medalist made no mistake from close range, it was the dream start and they continued it with 2 further points, a free from Stephen Dwyer and a point from play by Alan O'Shea. Skellig Rangers were finding it hard to settle however a good move resulted in Ciaran Keating squaring a ball across the goalmouth for Sean Countney to finish to the net, it was the perfect response for the Rangers however Waterville did not panic and continued to play fast attacking football, they knocked up 2 further points form play by the skillful Stephen Dwyer & midfielder Gearoid O Sullivan and another goal following a mistake in the Skellig Rangers defence. Rangers came back into the game just before half time and got a point from Wayne O Sullivan to leave the half time score 1-1 to 2-4 in Waterville's favour.
Rangers had it all to do in the second half to claw back the 6 point deficit, they started brightly with a point from play by Sean Courtney & a free from Ciaran Keating. However the impressive team play of Waterville in the first half continued and they notched up an important point from the boot of Stephen Dwyer when it looked like Rangers were getting back into the game. Rangers had plenty scoring opportunities however their accuracy let them down.  Stephen Dwyer added another free before Sean Courtney chipped in with another point with less than 10 minutes remaining. As Rangers went in search of a goal, Waterville sealed victory with a point from Denis Dwyer. Chris O Driscoll added a point for the Ranger in injury time.
It was a disappointing loss for the Rangers on home soil, the bad start made it an uphill battle however the youthful Waterville were the better team throughout. Their all round team effort means that their football season looks like it is only beginning while the long winter awaits the Rangers players & supporters!
