Senior County League Skellig Rangers 1-10 Castlegregory 0-07.
This Round 7 County League Division 2 game was played in Pairc Chill
Imeallach on Sunday, it was the meeting of two recent All Ireland Junior
Club Champions with the 2009 champions getting the upper hand on this
occasion. Both teams lined out with much different teams from their
respective historic days in Croke Park but this did not take from a sporting
and competitive game of football.Slippery conditions prevailed through out the game
however Skellig took the
upper hand in the game right from the throw in and never looked back. An
early free by Brian Hickey opened the scoring and further points from play
by Sean Courtney, Mickey Keating and Brian Murphy put the Rangers in the
driving seat with their good start reflecting in the scoreboard. It was
almost 20minutes before Castlegregory opening their account. However Rangers
dominance was further reflected in the scoreboard with a goal from Seamus O
Sullivan, the corner back raced onto a quickly taken free and drilled the
ball low into the net to give the goalkeeper no chance. Castlegregory
responded with 2 further points however just before half time midfielder
Colin O Sullivan scored a fine point from play to leave the half time score
1-05 to 0-03.The second half got underway with castle bringing the game to the Rangers
with 2 converted frees bringing them back into the game, however Rangers
upped their performance again and the old reliable Brian Hickey kicked an
important long range free to widen the gap to 4 however Castle continued to
battle hard and had another point to bring the game back to 3. However two
excellently converted 45's and a free from the left peg of Daniel O Sullivan
put daylight between the teams and a final point from full forward Chris O
Driscoll closed out the game. It was another important win for Skellig and one which all
should be happy
