Juniors advance in Round 2 of County League

posted 19 May 2013, 04:28 by Unknown user

Skellig Rangers Junior team travelled to Beaufort last Friday evening and came away with a win on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-6. Against a backdrop of thunder and lightning, played in wet, rainy conditions there was a real fizz to the game and despite the underfoot conditions, some good passages of quality football were evident.

In the opening half, Skellig dominated the first few minutes with John Tyler gathering a lot of possession on the wings and John Driscoll winning breaking ball. They could have been 5 or 6 points clear but wayward shooting, poor shot selection and kicks that were dropping short into the keepers hands ensured this was going to be closer than the first few minutes suggested. Bernard Casey and Micheál O’ Sullivan tapped over points and soon after Brendan O’ Sullivan kicked over a good point. However, Beaufort got a goal from after Dan Doona lobbed keeper Mike Brennan after Skellig failed to clear the ball from their defence. They then went ahead when they scored another goal and another point from lively centre forward Edwin Kelleher. Mark Conway introduced Sean Courtney with a few minutes before half time and Aaron Shea came on to replace John Tyler. This change was to prove crucial in the second half. Skellig were down by 3 points at half time, 2-3 to 0-6.

The second half began with a much improved display from Skellig and they had Sean Courtney to thank for bringing them back into the game. Courtney, playing his first competitive match this year, slotted the ball past the keeper after a wonderful ball from Brian O’ Driscoll. Bernard Casey kicked over again and so did Brendan O’ Keefe. Beaufort, however hung on and added another point from Ed O’ Sullivan. Courtney collected the ball again and in similar fashion to the first goal, slotted it with ease past the despairing keeper. The game fizzled out with Skellig defending well with the likes of Mike Walsh and Declan O’ Sullivan showing composure and experience in the backline and Sean Courtney leading the attack. Full time: Beaufort 2-6 Skellig Rangers 2-11. Well done to all involved. 2 wins from 2 and Listry @ home next Friday the 24th at 7.30 pm
