Intermediate Club Football Championship.

On Saturday evening last in Pairc Chill Imeallach Portmagee Skellig Rangers and Keel commenced battle in Round 1 of the Intermediate Club Football Championship. Rangers fired first on 5 min with a Gary O’Driscoll point from play. Keel then replied with points from midfielder Burke and corner forward Sullivan with another point by James long keeping Keel in front.  But two points both by Ciaran Keating and Gary Driscoll kept the Rangers in front.  Jason Foley and Danny O’Sullivan swapped points.  On the 28th minute Liam Sheehan replaced Jason Foley and his first touch resulted in a goal but just before half time Rangers replied straight away with a free by young and accurate Danny O’Sullivan.

Half time score

Rangers 0-8 pts           Keel 1-4 pts

The second half opened with points swapped by Liam Sheehan and Gary O’Driscoll.  Sheehan on forty three minutes then put over a forty five to equal this tie.  But no one could predict what was about to happen next,  the game up to this was a titanic struggle but keel keeled over form here on out with Ciaran Keating scoring 2 goals and 3 points in six magical minutes,  Gary Driscoll supplying him with radar passes.  Liam Sheehan added a consolation point form Keel on full time leaving the score at rangers 2-12 Keel 1-7.

On reflection, Keel’s long ball tactic was mopped up by the Rangers defence.  In goal for Rangers was Martin O’Sullivan was just superb and solid in guarding the net.  As a unit all backs were very good by Rangers in particular Stephen ‘Rock’ O’Sullivan at full back and ably assisted by Seamus O’Sullivan. Midfield was even with no clean ball caught.  The half forward line by Rangers was lethal led by captain Hickey. The full forward line did well with Gary O’Driscoll terrorising them.  The subs introduced by Rangers were Alan Devane, Declan Sullivan, Michael Keating, Brian Murphy, and Bernard Casey.  In particular Alan devane and Brian Murphy caused havoc with their non-stop intelligent running on and off the ball.

Keel will wonder what happened herein the second half especially in the last ten minutes but they never gave up with Liam Sheehan playing very well and their only scorer in the second half.  Others to play well for Keel were Martin Burke, Bart Murphy and Thomas Ladden. Subs introduced Stephen Cahillane, Liam O’Sullivan, Jer Foley, Timmy O’Connor and Mossy Moriarty all played their part.
