After winning the Division 4 Junior County League on the Friday of the August Bank Holiday last year, the pressure was on to do the double and claim the Division 6 title. However, it wasn't to be as Skellig Rangers met a fitter, hungrier and more dominant side in Listry. They lost out last Friday evening played under the summer sunshine in Glenbeigh on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-6. Listry were much more dangerous and clinical in their attack and they raced into a two point lead after only two minutes. Skellig were failing to find their inside forward line with good ball and this was down to good tackling and defending on Listry’s part. Skellig eventually got on the scoreboard when Sean Courtney popped over a free after great work from Gerard O’ Sullivan. Listry added further scores in a 10 minute spell that seen them race further clear. However, Rangers had Courtney to thank again and he reduced the deficit to just the minimum when he drove through the defence and pointed a good score. Ronan Shea and Brendan O’ Keeffe both pointed aswell. However, the half ended with Listry leading 0-8 to 0-5.

The second half began with the introduction of John Tyler and Martin O' Sullivan from the subs bench for Skellig to try and find a focal point for their attack but again Listry came out of the blocks the quicker playing into the townside goal and had a goal from their attacking wing back after 6 minutes when he buried it past Mike Brennan. Skellig, sloppy in possession failed to get a good move together and were again punished when they conceded a penalty a few minutes later to make the scoreline really bleak for the Portmagee side. Sean Courtney and Ronan Shea again scored to reduce the margin after Trojan work from Gerard O’ Sullivan in midfield but Listry pushed on and their lead was never in doubt when they kicked 3 unanswered points despite the best efforts of Brendan Keating who was the stand out defender for Skellig on the day. Courtney, Skellig’s best forward on the day, scored a penalty late on but that was to prove a mere consolation as Listry ran out convincing winners by 10 points.

Bernard Casey proved to be a crucial loss on the day as his presence in the 40 would have been vital for the attack of Skellig. The infamous Number 13 captain hoodoo came back to haunt Skellig Rangers on the day. In the post match press conference, manager Mark Conway offered no excuses to his side's loss when he said his team were outclassed by a ''much fitter, stronger and quicker team''. All eyes for this Junior team now turn to the McElligott Cup competition which is due to be played in 3 weeks time.
Skellig Rangers lined out as follows: Mike Brennan, Brendan Keating, Declan O' Sullivan, Aaron Shea, Gerard O' Sullivan, Ronan O' Shea, Mike Keating, Brendan O' Keeffe, Brian O' Driscoll, Brendan O' Sullivan, Sean Courtney, Mike Reardon, Micheál O' Sullivan, Damian Murphy, Mike Walsh. Subs used: John Tyler, Martin O' Sullivan, John O' Driscoll, Micheal Faha O' Sullivan.
