County League: Skellig Rangers welcomed reigning All-Ireland Intermediate Champions Ardfert to Portmagee on Sunday in Round 3 of the County League and despite both teams missing several players through injury, they served up a decent battle in spite of the driving rain, howling wind and slippy conditions. The home side raced into an early 1-3 to 0-0 score when full back Stephen O' Sullivan goaled from long range after the ball skimmed off the surface flicking off full forward Martin O' Sullivan passing the Ardfert keeper before points from the same player, Darragh O' Sullivan and Micheàl O' Sullivan. A lot of the play was around the middle and seemed very crowded with Ardfert finding it hard to progress up the field due to the wind and good defending from Brendan Murphy and Ronan O' Shea. It was very evident that the wind played a part on the match with the home side going in at half time 1-6 to 0-1 up. Daragh O' Sullivan and Alan Devane tapped over for Rangers to give them a commanding lead early in the second half but with Ardfert, playing with the wind, upped their game and drove forward with points from Jerry Wallace and Kevin Shanahan to chip away at the deficit. However, they never seemed to threaten Skellig Rangers goalmouth despite attacking quite a lot. Ronan O' Shea was well aided by Brian and Gerard O' Sullivan in bringing the ball out of defence up the field which was crucial for Skellig as they looked to defend the lead they built up in the first half. Daragh O' Sullivan finished the game with a pointed free after another great run by Diarmaid Keating, making the scoreline 1-10 to 0-6. The result means we now get our first two points on the board in the County League.Team: |

Seniors: The first round of the Intermediate Championship began last Sunday as Currow made the long trip South to face us in the April sunshine. They met a Rangers side that had several players ruled out with injury, Aidan 'Dash' O' Sullivan being ruled out during the warm up. After a pulsating match that ebbed and flowed, it ended after extra time on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-11. Both teams showed good movement and intensity and a draw more than likely was a fair result after both teams offered up a great spectacle for the supporters. The first half was evenly contested with Anthony O' Driscoll competing well with Seamus Scanlon around the middle and Brian Hickey controlling affairs from centre back. Currow were on the scoreboard with Johnny Buckley and Mike McCarthy scoring with Daragh Sullivan and Alan Devane responding well with points for Rangers. Currow were given a boost after a mix up in the home defence allowed them in for a soft goal. However, Skellig responded well when corner forward Micheál O' Sullivan angled a ball towards goal and it looped into the net over Shane O' Leary's head to make the scoreline 1-4 to 1-2 at HT, Rangers being in the lead having played against a slight breeze. The second half started and Currow stormed out of the blocks when atacking running from Ian Somers saw Dan O' Shea score again. However, Diarmaid Keating pointed over two superb points and at this stage it was point for point. Daragh O' Sullivan, kicked over another placed ball but Currow kept coming back and had another scored free from Dan O' Shea. Stephen O' Sullivan, Brian Hickey and Brendan Murphy defended well and this allowed Rangers to push on and equalise from the effective Daragh O' Sullivan after a great surging run from Brian Murphy resulted in a 45'. The draw after full time meant two 10 minute periods of extra time were played and Currow started brightly again and went two clear with good wing back play from Mike Hanafin. The pace, intensity and flow of the game meant some of the players were cramping up but the effort by both sides remained 100 per cent. Substitutes were made by both sides to freshen things up and keep the momentum going. With minutes remaining, Currow were leading and on the verge of progressing to the next round when the home side were awarded a free. Daragh O' Sullivan showed nerves of steel, stepped up and curled over a great free kick from 35 yards to level proceedings to the sound of the final whistle, 1-11 to 1-11. Team: P. Result of Saturday’s South Kerry League match: Skellig Rangers 0-7 Valentia Young Islanders 1-02. Played in Portmagee, the first half only saw two scores, one point each from both teams as the players had to deal with a high wind blowing down the field, showers of rain and a muddy pitch. Despite playing with the strong breeze, Rangers couldn’t manage to open up a lead due to Valentia being strong defensively and tenacious in the tackling, especially John Curran and Paul O’ Sullivan. The points came from the outstanding Aidan O’ Sullivan and Paul O’ Connor for Valentia. Skellig Rangers made three changes at half time with Bernard Casey, Alan Devane and Brendan O’ Sullivan replacing Anthony O’ Driscoll, Mike Keating and Sean Courtney respectively. Valentia started the second half brightly and had a goal from Jim Lynch. This seemed to rally the Rangers, however, and they responded through a Micheál O’ Sullivan point and two Daragh O’ Sullivan frees. Bernard Casey equalised when he slotted over from close range and Micheál O’ Sullivan put the Rangers in the lead when he kicked over from a narrow angle after a good run from Brian O' Sullivan. Skellig Rangers were now in control and Bernard Walsh capped a fine performance for himself when he kicked a great point from 30 yards to ensure that his team would win the match, 1-02 to 0-7. Match report: South Kerry League 2nd round, Skellig Rangers 1-14 to Sneem Derrynane 1-4. Playing with the aid of a slight breeze in the first half, Skellig Rangers raced into an early lead with points from Micheal O' Sullivan, Daragh O' Sullivan, Brendan O' Sullivan, Sean Courtney and Bernard Casey. The home side dominated the half and Sneem/Derrynane struggled to score, due to good defensive work from Rangers and the fact the wind was against them. The half ended 0-7 to 0-0. The second half began with a pointed free from Daragh O' Sullivan and Micheal O' Sullivan made it 0-9 to no score when Morgan O' Donoghoue pointed for the away team. Mike Keating and Ian Galvin exchanged points and Sneem/Derrynane were boosted when they scored a goal from wing forward Denis O' Sullivan despite Padraig O' Sullivan getting a hand to the ball. Sneem/Derrynane began to gain momentum and scored another point to reduce the deficit. However, Rangers overcame that period and had scores from Micheal O' Sullivan again with Daragh O' Sullivan converting two more placed balls. The last kick of the game was a goal for Skellig Rangers after Aidan O' Sullivan played a great pass to Daragh O' Sullivan who in turn handpassed it to his fellow corner forward Micheál O' Sullivan who dispatched it from 12 yards to the sound of the final whistle. Skellig Rangers V Gneeveguilla 31/08/14
Skellig Rangers collected 2 valuable County League points on Sunday against a defensive, physical Gneeveguilla side on a scoreline of 2-08 to 0-9. Rangers began with some good scores from inside forwards Micheál O' Sullivan, Diarmaid and Ciarán Keating who both scored from long range. Gneeveguilla were finding it difficult to get on the scoreboard as they were not only playing against a strong breeze but also a strong tough defence. Keating pointed from a free again. The midfield area was bunched and tackles were being made with the breaking ball difficult to gather due to the slippy conditions and the odd shower of rain during the first half. Despite playing with the wind in this half Rangers looked like they would go in at half time only 6 points clear. However, Ciarán Keating gathered possession and made an incisive run through the defence, burying the ball to the net with a classy finish. The half ended with the score 1-7 to 0-1. The second half seen a much improved display from Gneeveguilla and they scored some good points from Dj O' Connor in particular. They were beginning to assert control around the middle but despite their dominance, Rangers worked the ball well to Diarmaid Keating and he goaled well after Alan Devane pointed. The away side had more scores and Rangers defence were beginning to be pressurised coming out with the ball. However, with good tackling and defensive work from Brian Hickey, Brian Murphy and Steven O' Sullivan, Gneeveguilla were unable to secure that goal they needed. Gneeveguilla narrowed it down to 6 points and then had another score from Brendan Sheehan to make it 2-08 to 0-10, full time result. The result means we are now in 8th place on 8 points with Laune Rangers and Kenmare the final two games in the County League.
